The National Centre for Statistics and Analysis (NCSA) has revealed that nearly 250,000 children are injured in car accidents each year. Sadly, around 2,000 of these are fatal.
The injuries suffered range from serious and life changing, such as brain injury or paralysis, to relatively minor but, as with adults, the most common injury is whiplash.
The driver of a vehicle is responsible for ensuring that child passengers are safely secured in a suitable car seat and/or seat belt. If used correctly, these safety measures significantly reduce the risk of the child suffering serious injury or death in a car accident.
Despite the use of appropriate safety restraints however, children do sometimes suffer injury if the vehicle they are a passenger in is in a collision. If your child has been involved in a car accident which has resulted in injury, you may wish to claim compensation on their behalf. Even if the driver of the vehicle they were in is a relative and is proved to be to blame for the accident, it is still possible for a claim to be made on behalf of the child.
